Comment from Facebook 2022 "I
had the pleasure of crewing on bear the 81 and 82 seasons with the original
owner out of Grand Haven Michigan. Midge Verplank who was a wonderful owner
and an excellent racer. Most of the crew were competitive E scow sailors . She
was built at Palmer Johnson in aluminum with a Stearns triple spreader rig,
hydraulics, and North sails. A real first class program. She won a lot of hardware.
We were second in the fleet corrected in the 82 Mac losing to Leading Edge.
Sleeping Bear was almost impossible to beat in light air and a real handful
downwind in a breeze. A beautiful boat .

"We raced the Doug Petersen designed two tonner “Sleeping
Bear” on Lake Michigan in the ‘80’s. This boat proved unbeatable
in light air particularly as it had a penalty stick in it 72’ high. Here
she is in 'Bear Air'".
