2007 22 mai, La Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09 accueille deux nouveaux bateaux espagnols en son sein. Cette participation ibérique officielle a été confirmée par Francisco Camps Ortiz, le président de la Région de Valence, lors d’une réception à Alicante, le port de départ de la prochaine édition.

Telefónicas christened, Spanish royalty do the honours in Alicante, The two Telefónica team boats have been christened by Spanish royalty during a ceremony at the team base in Alicante, Spain, the start port for the Volvo Ocean Race.

26 janvier, Le plus touché est Telefonica Black, officiellement en suspension de course, qui a du rebrousser chemin et qui vient de regagner le port de Subic Bay dans l’île de Luzon aux Philippines. Son équipe technique, déjà sur place, a immédiatement commencé le check up complet du VO 70, notamment la jonction coque-pont, avant de donner l’agenda précis du bateau pour les prochains jours.

August, received from Ulysse "Passing Kornati Islands last night in perfect calm seas. Weather is on our side, a dismasted sailboat rely on her engine only. Back on the water toward her refit destination, "Telefonica Black" is now temporarily renamed "Vela" under Maltese Flag. The 70 foot Volvo racer, ex "Telelefonica Black" has now officially joined the Vela Code Team. A yacht designer Dan Lenard is proud to announce that a purchase of this historic Volvo 70 sailing boat, one of the fastest sailing boats on the planet, has been concluded and the racer is now traveling to a destination in North Adriatic for an extensive refit in designated shipyard. Her new life of a repurposed racer saved from the inevitable scrap will be built on an uncompromised role in advocating an awareness of our seas and oceans plastic pollution around the planet. Safe travels and welcome to a new and prosperous life, "Vela"."
