2022-2023 Refit

2024 April, For Sale Contessa 35 1977, The Contessa 35 was built by Jeremy Rodgers Ltd, UK, to Doug Peterson's designs. From 1974, 80 examples were built. Winner of the 1974 One Ton Cup and runner-up in the 1979 Fastnet (the dramatic edition in which 15 participants drowned..). Arrived in Polynesia by cargo ship from England in 1978. The second owner made this boat famous in the world of Polynesian regattas, with an impressive record of success. The third and current owners of Mustang have carried out a complete refit of the boat in 2022-2023... The Contessa 35 lives up to its name as a 'racing cruiser': it's an excellent racing boat that's also habitable. Comfortable for couples or small families, it can sleep up to 7 people. It has a deep cockpit, closed at the stern. Built in fibreglass-polyester composite, where the operators lay the strips of fabric by hand, followed by a roll of resin, to create a thick hull (20 mm!). As a result, the bulkheads are laminated to the hull, as is the deck (and not glued, as is the case today), the ballast is made of lead, which is denser and less prone to corrosion than today's cast iron, the mast is continuous and the rudder shaft is built around a solid stainless steel axle 44 mm in diameter... Not bad for a 6-tonne yacht! Inside, there's a forward berth with two folding berths (converted into a single double bed), an aft berth with two bunk berths designed for sleeping at the helm, a chart table, a toilet, a galley and the traditional central saloon. Another life project does not allow us to take full advantage of this little jewel and of sailing in Polynesia, which is why we are putting it up for sale. Visible alongside the quay at the Tahiti Yacht Club in Arue. Possible delivery in New Zealand.
